Match Report

The Warriors pulled together but a solitary goal for Motherwell made all the difference!

The Warriors were seeking to register their first three points on Saturday, but poor weather conditions and a top Motherwell team halted their plans.

Stenny showed their patience off the ball in the first half as Motherwell dominated possession, however in the opening 30 minutes the Lanarkshire side were sloppy despite having a large portion of the ball.

The only shot on target for the Warriors came in the third minute as Ross Taylor’s tame effort from 20 yards out proved an easy save for Connelly in the Motherwell net.

Motherwell were eager to respond and captain, O’Donnell thought he had opened the scoring in the 7th minute, though his header was ruled offside. The Steelmen continued to apply the pressure through corners and free kicks, but they couldn’t find the target.

Deejay was called into action, really for the first time, in the 37th minute as Slattery’s sublime freekick required a fingertip save. From the reaction of the Well midfielder, he couldn’t believe his effort hadn’t found the top corner- all credit must go to our stopper for an unbelievable save.

Just two minutes later, the Steelmen reaped their rewards as an unmarked O’Donnell headed in his effort, after a well swung in corner evaded the Stenny defence. 0-1.

The Warriors still had a lot of belief going into the second half and they certainly gave it all they had in the final 45 minutes. Weather conditions became worse and that seeped into the game as the pitch became slippery and the ball zipped along the ground, giving both sets of players a difficult time.

Our number one had another match defining save in the 62nd minute as he denied Motherwell frontman, Sule from close range. Similarly, Anderson hurled himself on the line eight minutes later to deny Balmer a certain goal off the back of a powerful header.

The last chance saloon came for the Warriors in the 90th minute as a long throw in caught out the Well defence allowing Buckie to wheedle his way into the box however, our skipper poked his effort agonisingly wide.

The Warriors will be disappointed by the result today but can take faith from the heart they put into their performance and will aim to carry their determination into Tuesday night’s game. We hope to see as many of you as possible at Clyde as we continue our Premier Sports Cup campaign.

Motherwell come to town as the Warriors gear up for their first home fixture of the season!

On Saturday, our Premier Sports Cup action continues as we host Premiership side- Motherwell in our first home game of the season. We are aiming to put our best foot forward to bag our first three points in this competition.

The Warriors stepped out against Greenock Morton on Tuesday night, but despite their best efforts the scoreline wasn’t to be. However, with another fixture steaming around the corner, the Warriors are setting their sights on slaying a giant.

A few close shaves for Motherwell

Despite their Premiership stature, the Steelmen have left it late on two occasions in their cup games- riding out a draw against Clyde (before bagging the bonus point in a penalty shootout) and then relying on a last gasp winner against Peterhead. The Warriors can take faith from these results as they both prove the Motherwell backline is penetrable and a quick counter could catch them off guard.

One man who has been a constant for the Steelman despite their undesirable results, and whose speed, agility and precision could cause the Warriors problems, is Zimbabwe international, Maswanhise. The lighting quick winger, with some serious skill spared the Well’s blushes against Clyde as his brace shored up three points. The electric winger is certainly one to watch ahead of this fixture.

The last time the Well came to town

This fixture is a first in over four decades, with the last competitive meeting between these two sides coming in 1980. The mighty Stenny held out to a draw at Ochileview on this occasion and forced a replay in the Scottish Cup.

If we had to rewind it back to one of our four wins against Motherwell, this came at the fortress of Ochilview in the same season but a different competition. The League Cup witnessed some fine Warriors action as they dispatched Motherwell in a 2-0 victory -a feat Ochilview would gladly host again.

Though these teams are leagues apart, the mission for the Warriors remains the same: to register three points against quality opposition. The Warriors will come out fighting and aim to slay the Lanarkshire giants in order to register our first win of the tournament.

We know Ochilview will be bouncing on Saturday, and we need every Warrior there to support the team and help them over the line. Your support is always vital to the team, but none more so than on Saturday when we hope to see as many of you there as possible and in fine voice. Remember to stay up to date via all our social media channels.
