Gary Harkins is a Warrior

Stenhousemuir Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of veteran playmaker Gary Harkins.

Harkins, 35, left Partick Thistle at the end of the transfer window before agreeing a deal that brings him to Ochilview. The experienced attacking midfielder has enjoyed an excellent career which started in the Celtic Youth Academy before joining Blackburn at 16 years old. He then had further spells down south with Huddersfield, Bury, Blackpool and Grimsby before moving back home. Greenock born, Harkins returned to Scotland in 2007 for his first spells at the Jags before moving to Kilmarnock, Dundee and St Mirren. More recently he has played with Ayr United, Morton and Queen of the South before joining Partick last January for the second time in his career.

Harkins has amassed 495 professional games over an impressive 17 year career scoring 85 goals. His last goal was actually against the Warriors when Partick Thistle defeated Stenhousemuir in the Caramel Wafer Cup quarter Final in November. He becomes Davie Irons 12th signing after a busy January and is available for tomorrow’s home game against Cowdenbeath.

First Team Manager Davie Irons commented on his latest recruit,

‘I am thrilled to be able to bring a player of Gary’s quality to the Club. Once he intimated he was interested in coming in we moved quickly to agree a deal with him. He is an incredibly gifted football player who has been a top player at a high level in Scotland for a number of years, his career speaks for itself. At this stage in the season to be able to bring in a player of such quality to the squad is fantastic, if I am being honest it’s not one I expected to happen.’

‘The Board have backed myself and Goldie incredibly this window, I could not ask for more. I have been so pleased with the business we have done but the Board said on a few occasions if a top player became available late on the Club would do its best to make it happen. He trained last night and we offered him a deal immediately which he accepted. He is desperate to play, he has made the choice to come here and that says a lot for the Club and says a lot about him as a person. He is a player that I am sure the fans will love to watch, he has the potential to be a real match winner for us. ‘

‘It’s an excellent addition to what is an ever improving squad, we are in a much stronger position now. It’s time to ensure a consistency of performance which I am confident will lead to a strong final third of the season.’

Welcome to the Warriors Gary.
