SFA Scottish Youth Cup 3rd Round
Stenhousemuir U19’s 3 v Raith Rovers 2 aet
The game started off at a frantic pace with both teams trying to get the upper hand.
Raith Rovers took the lead in the 9th minute scoring from a harmless free kick into the box which goalie Sean Diamond dropped and the ball fell over the line.
The game went backwards and forwards for the remainder of the 1st half without either team looking threatening, when in the 43rd minute Raith Rovers went 2-0 ahead when a cross into the box was only partly cleared after two of our defenders collided with each other while going for the same ball allowing a Raith forward to score with ease.
Things looked really bleak for the U19’s at this point as they had hardly created a scoring opportunity.
Half-time 0-2.
Whatever Coaches Andy Cunningham and Martin Feeney said to the players at the interval seemed to work as the U19’s came out fired up in the 2nd half and hemmed Raith Rovers into their half of the park for long periods.
Jack Taylor hit the underside of the bar with a shot that then rebounded of the post and was cleared to safety. It looked like we would never score as a resolute Raith defence held strong to every thing we threw at them.
With only 5 minutes of normal time left, Stuart Love, who has only just returned from a loan period at East Stirlingshire, managed to force the ball over the line after a goal-line scramble to make the score 1-2.
In the 90th minute the Raith Rovers were reduced to 10 men when their centre half was sent off for a two footed tackle on Jamie O’Grady.
With the game fast dying out, in the 3rd minute of added time we won a free kick 30 yards out. The resulting free kick was fired into the box and Jamie O’Grady got his head to it looping into the goal which the keeper could only parry into the net. 2-2.
Raith Rovers took the centre and seconds later the Referee blew for full-time.
We took the lead for the 1st time in the game in the 95 minute with the best move of the match resulted in Stuart Love beating the goalie with an angled drive from 12 yards.
There were a few chances for both teams to score in the remaining 25 minutes but we were generally comfortable and played out the remainder of the game to proceed to the 4th Round of the competition.
