Match Report

Stenhousemuir v Stirling Albion at Ochilview Park, Stenhousemuir om 2.8.11

Stirlingshire Cup First Round                                  Att 267
Stenhousemuir 4 [Burns 2, Quinn 3, Love 18,75]
Stirling Albion 0

The Stirlingshire Cup is still officially a senior competition unlike many of the other district cups than are now played for by Under 19 teams. Both clubs decided that this game would be played with players from that level though the odd overage player was able to play. This meant that Paul Quinn who was the most experienced player in either team was also the oldest at the ripe old age of 20.

There was a controversial start to the game when Stenhousemuir were awarded a penalty after only 90 seconds of the game when Gary Booth was adjudged to have fouled Stuart Love whilst the Warrior had a goal scoring opportunity. Referee Craig Charleston dismissed Booth and also cautioned Jamie Clark for dissent. Stirling subbed Jordan Malley for sub keeper Neil Desmond and the ex-Warrior’s first touch of the ball was to pick the ball out of the net after Jordan Burns converted the penalty. This must surely be a candidate for the earliest dismissal in a game at Ochilview.

Not surprisingly Stirling Albion were in a state of shock at this state of affairs and things got worse a minute later when Paul Quinn scored the Warriors second goal with a lob over Desmond to effectively kill the game off.

Stirling to their credit gradually got their game together and began to show some potential but they were to concede another goal in the 18th minute when Stuart Love cut in and fired a shot past Desmond and into the far corner of the net. The Stirling keeper was not surprisingly the busier of the two keepers and he showed his qualities at the end of the half with a superb save from a deflected Joseph McCafferty effort.

The second half saw Stirling continue to work hard but not surprisingly they began to tire from their efforts in the later stages of the game. Stuart Love scored his second goal of the night in the 75th minute of the game tapping in a rebound after Desmond had done well to save a powerful strike. There was no further scoring in the game so Stenhousemuir progress to the semi-finals where they meet Dumbarton at the Strathclyde Homes Stadium.

It is difficult to judge the players when the game is over and done within three minutes of kick off but they did show that they were able to get on with the game in a professional manner and that at least bodes well for the future.
