Match Report
Stenhousemuir produced a resilient away performance to defeat Inverness Caledonian Thistle 2–1, securing another valuable three points and extending their unbeaten run to three matches in all competitions.
It was the home side who struck first, applying early pressure and eventually winning a penalty midway through the first half. Paul Allan stepped up for Inverness and made no mistake from the spot, giving the Highlanders the advantage. The Warriors, however, after a change of formation about 20 mins in allowed them to respond and settle a bit. The just before the break, Stenhousemuir were awarded a penalty of their own, and Matthew Aitken held his nerve to fire past the goalkeeper and level the contest going into half-time.
The second half was a fiercely competitive affair, with Inverness pushing forward in search of a second goal and Darren Jamieson called into action on several occasions to deny efforts from distance. Stenhousemuir took the defensive approach knowing Inverness would be on the attack to more in the second half. The counter attacking was clearly the play and we were rewarded late on with a moment of real quality. Scott McGill threaded a perfectly timed pass through to Ross Taylor, who cut inside and drove a low strike inside the near post to put the Warriors ahead with just ten minutes remaining.
The closing stages were tense as Inverness threw everything forward, forcing corners and long-range attempts, but the Warriors’ defence, bolstered by the introduction of Nicky Jamieson, stood firm. Darren Jamieson produced a string of excellent saves to preserve the lead until the final whistle.
Full-Time: Inverness CT 1–2 Stenhousemuir
PREVIEW
Stenhousemuir head into one of their toughest early-season tests this Saturday as they make the long trip north to face Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
It has been a positive response from Gary Naysmith’s side after a narrow 2–1 defeat to Alloa Athletic on the opening day. Last weekend’s 1–0 victory over Cove Rangers at Ochilview showcased the Warriors’ ability to dig deep and see out a tight contest, with a well-worked first-half goal proving the difference. That momentum carried into midweek as Stenhousemuir progressed in the KDM Trophy with a 2–1 win, displaying both attacking threat and defensive resilience.
Dale Carrick has been a standout in the early weeks of the campaign. The experienced forward has found the net in both league fixtures so far, giving him two goals in two games, and will be looking to continue that run against one of the division’s strongest defences. His movement and finishing have been a constant threat, and his partnership with the Warriors’ creative midfielders could be key in unlocking Inverness.
Inverness are in strong form and full of confidence. Despite starting the season with a five-point deduction, the Highlanders have wasted no time climbing the table, opening their campaign with a commanding 3–0 win away to Kelty Hearts before following up with a 2–0 home success over Peterhead. The Inverness side have been clinical in front of goal and solid at the back, conceding just once in their last four matches in all competitions. Their current run of seven wins from their last ten matches underlines their consistency and strength on home turf.
The head-to-head record favours Inverness, who are unbeaten in the last four meetings between the sides. That run includes a 4–1 win in the Highlands back in March, while the most recent encounter at Ochilview in April finished 1–1 after a determined Warriors performance. Stenhousemuir will draw belief from that result, knowing that a disciplined defensive shape and quick transitions could cause problems for their hosts.
With both sides in good spirits and looking to build early-season momentum, this fixture promises to be an intriguing contest. The Warriors will need to stay compact, limit Inverness’s attacking options, and make the most of set-pieces and counter-attacks if they are to return south with points in hand. The growing confidence within the squad, coupled with recent results, means they will travel with quiet belief that an upset is possible.
Be there. Be loud. Back the Warriors.
