Stat Attack – An Occasional Delve into the Season Statistics - #2 May 2007.

Let Us Entertain You!

No-one would have believed after the first game of 2006/7 just what an amazing season this was going to be for goal scoring!  As the team came home with a point safely tucked away after a gritty goalless draw at East Fife no-one could have predicted what was to follow for the rest of the season!  It was in fact the only goalless game of the season and for the neutral at least Stenny were the team to follow!

McManus slots home Stenny's second in the amazing 5-3 defeat to East Fife!

By the end of the season in all competitions Stenny would score 56 and concede 71.  Five goals or more were scored by the Warriors or their opposition on no less than six occasions though oddly there was never a higher score than that.  The finale to the season was particularly exciting with 32 goals being scored in the last eight games alone including the amazing 5-3 home defeat by East fife where ten man Stenny eventually succumbed after a brave fight back. In fact that game was also significant in any statistical review of the season because despite scoring so many goals it also saw the *only* goal by any Warriors defender in the whole campaign! Gary Thom showed the veterans how it was done with a fine header to mark his first ever senior goal.  This game also equalled the highest number of goals in any game in the Third Division, only being matched by Albion's 6-2 home win over Elgin City!

By the end of the season 53 league goals had been scored which impressively was two more than eventual champions Berwick.  Of course the picky amongst you may immediately want to mention that we conceded more than twice the number that Berwick did. This was consistent with the division though which was split down the middle in terms of the defences. Tthe top five all conceded 37 or less while the bottom five all conceded 61 or more with the Shire having the dubious honour of conceding the most with an amazing 78 ending up in their net!  It was a wretched season again for them as they only scored 27 - we won't mention how nearly a fifth of those were scored in a single game!

Can Statistics Actually Be Any Use to Anyone?

At the end of Stat-Attack 1 we gave you the following prediction for the next game at Dumbarton:-

Dumbarton 1             Stenny 1
       Own Goal 90             Henderson 1

And even though the game was postponed the final score was:-

Dumbarton 1             Stenny 1
      Own Goal 56             Dempster 40

And given that it was meant to be a tongue in cheek prediction designed to show that statistics couldn't prove anything . . . we'll leave you to draw your own conclusions.

Where are the goals coming from next year?

It was pretty much a feature last year that many of the signings that both Des and Campbell brought in struggled to reproduce the excellent form they had shown for their previous clubs.  Step forwards one of the undoubted success stories of the season though in John Dempster!  John joined in January, scored twice on his debut against Elgin and literally raced to the top of the goal scoring charts finishing the season with 9, one ahead of Stenny legend Hutchison.

Four of Dempster's Goals During His Debut Season

Thankfully John is staying for next season and the big man will surely be targeting twenty plus to try to power Stenny further up the table.  However, as the table shows a lot of the other goal scorers are no longer at the club . . .

Scorer League Lge Cup Grand Total
Dempster 9   9
Hutchison 8   8
McBride 7   7
Own Goal 5 1 6
Baird 5 1 6
Thomson 3   3
Diack 3   3
Templeton 3   3
McManus 2   2
Tyrrell 2   2
McLeish 2   2
Desmond 1   1
Murphy 1   1
Fagan 1   1
Sinclair   1 1
Thom 1   1

What the table shows though is the hope for next season, with John there alongside Andy Thomson who will be desperate to show Warriors fans just what he is capable of!  Add that to the youngsters like Scott McManus, Steven Desmond and Gary Thom - the goal scoring centre half - and there are clearly goals there.  Then of course there is the exciting array of attacking players like Murdoch, Hampshire and Dillon that Campbell Money has already added to the squad. It's clear that next season could produce an exciting attacking blend!

Team And Supporters In Sync!

Stenny finished the season in seventh place of course.  The players always appreciate the backing and encouragement from the crowd and would like to thank all the club's loyal supporters for their contribution during the season.  Interestingly the team's league position matched the attendances this year:-

It's Still Not Worth Getting There Early!

In Stat Attack #1 we highlighted the fact that turning up early to Warriors games was not a great idea for Stenny fans.  This continued right to the end of the season.  In the first fifteen minutes of all the games put together Stenny only scored THREE goals set against twelve by the opposition.  The team did pick up in the latter stages of the season though with a much improved nine in minutes fifteen to thirty and Campbell will be hoping that next season he can push the team to get started even earlier!

Most goals came in the last fifteen minutes with Stenny and the opposition sharing Twenty Nine goals almost equally.  More late goals came against in the latter part of the season reversing the earlier trend of Stenny tending to get the late goals.

So, statistically speaking at least an interesting season for the Warriors and hopefully next year we'll be comparing the 07/08 season with Stenny's previous promotion campaign!

Stat Attack will be a very occasional feature on Stenhousemuirfc.com.  All statistics are drawn from the results of competitive matches this season as featured on our statistics page.  All errors and omissions are gladly received and apologised for in advance!
