Stat Attack – An Occasional Delve into the Season Statistics - #1 15th January 2007.

Can we Kick-Off at 3:30 please?

Stenny’s spectacular comeback victory at a wind and rain swept Ochilview Park this last Saturday and the previous home game provided an interesting insight to Stenny’s season so far.  The morale of the story is that Stenny fans should not worry too much about turning up late to Ochilview this season!  Slow starts involving early goals conceded followed by an increased ferocity in the second half raising hopes and reaping some rewards.

A rare early goal from Stenny scored by the ever-reliable "OG"!

In the first 30 minute period of all of the Warriors games this year Stenny have scored just four and conceded no less than seventeen goals!  And of those four scored one was an own goal conceded by Elgin back in September.   And if you’re wondering if things are better away from home than at Ochilview then it’s a sobering thought that the only player remaining at the club who has scored a first half away goal this season is JP McBride. He netted in the 5-2 away win at Albion Rovers.  So, if the supporter’s bus is running a little late it’s probably best not to fret too much over it.  The only other first half goals scored away from home were scored by the now departed John Baird and another own goal.

In actual fact though, even if you ignored all of the goals in the first thirty minutes of games this year Stenny would only have two more league points to show for their efforts.  We would, of course, have beaten St Mirren in the cup though!

Defenders Don't Score Goals!

In fact own goals have played a significant part in the Warriors’ season to date.  With the departure of John Baird following his successful loan spell at the club “OGs” is the third highest scorer for the Warriors this year weighing in with three in the League and one in the League Cup.  McBride who scored that fantastic 35 yard screamer in the dying stages against Elgin on Saturday is now ahead of the Hutch as the leading scorer at the club with six in the season.  However, new signing John Dempster looks a possible candidate to overtake him scoring two on his debut and only appearance to date.  Not surprisingly the forwards have weighed in with the majority of the goals with 19 of the 33 goals scored.  The rest are made up of the own goals and the midfielders.  Not a single Stenny goal has come from the defenders this year!

No Late Agony For Stenny Fans!

If the first half hour has been a disaster for Warriors fans then the second half of games has shown that the current Warriors squad lacks neither fitness nor character.   This shows particularly in the later stages of the game, in the last fifteen minutes Stenny have scored nine goals and only conceded five.

Every football supporters best and worst memories contain those wonderful or heartbreaking late winners and equalisers.  Amazingly for the Warriors no team has managed to put us through that particular form of torture yet this year if you count the last ten minutes as a “late” winner or equaliser.  Elgin came closest in September when they opened the scoring of their 2-0 home win in the Challenge Cup against us in the 79th minute. Other than that the late goals scored by the opposition only confirmed previously established winning margins rather than changing the result.

The latest "winner" vs The Warriors this season at Elgin.

On the other hand Stenny have inflicted that misery on opposition supporters three times this year. Probably the most dramatic was the 2-1 home win against Queens Park with the Warriors losing until the 81st minute until two regular scorers put away two in a minute to claw victory from the jaws of defeat. Leading scorer McBride got the first with our friend “Own Goal” netting the winner almost immediately after.

The other late winner was of course this last Saturday with McBride’s stunning, wind assisted, 35 yard strike breaking Elgin hearts and completing a dramatic and hard fought win from 2-0 down. This, and the classy McLeish equaliser late in injury time at East Fife will be enduring memories of the first half of the season which has seen as many lows as highs but as the above shows there have definitely been some genuine highs!

So What Does All This Mean For The Future?

Anyone who knows anything about statistics knows how important they are and that they can be used to reliably predict future events and particularly results.  It cannot be questioned then that the result on Saturday will be as follows:-

Dumbarton 1             Stenny 1
Own Goal 90              Henderson 1

** Note, when the game was actually due to be played it was postponed!  The statistics did not predict that!

Stat Attack will be a very occasional feature on Stenhousemuirfc.com.  All statistics are drawn from the results of competitive matches this season as featured on our statistics page.  All errors and omissions are gladly received and apologised for in advance!
