Meet The Manager

Israel Campbell Money gave up a career in the police to become full time when he signed for St Mirren in from Dailly Amateurs. He made his debut on 1st August 1978 in a friendly match against Southampton, who fielded a forward line of Mick Channon, Ted McDougall and Peter Osgood. Campbell played well with some fine saves and the Saints earned a 1-0 victory . His competitive debut came the following Saturday at Fir Park in an Anglo Scottish Cup tie. Unfortunately, despite another fine performance from young Dibble, Saints lost 1-0.

His opportunities in the first team were limited over the following seasons due to the performances of Billy Thomson. When Thomson was in dispute with the club toward the end of the1983/84 season, Campbell grabbed his chance and over the following eleven seasons played in over 400 matches for St.Mirren. The highlight of his career was being a part of the 1987 Scottish Cup winning team.

A very brave goalkeeper, Campbell had more than his fair share of knocks, and was carried off the park unconscious on several occasions after making saves at strikers feet.

Capped at under-21 level on three occasions, Campbell was regularly a part of the full international set up, but with Alan Rough and then Jim Leighton as competition he was never to gain a full appearance. He is Saints top appearance holder in European matches (eight appearances between 1985 and 1988). He scored in a penalty shoot out in a league cup match at Brechin on 20th August 1991, but his most famous strike was in the penalty shoot-out in the final of the Singapore Cup in 1987 when he slotted home the fourth penalty in Saints victory.

Campbell left Love Street in 1996 to become Stranraer's first full time manager and guided them to the League Challenge Cup in 1996/97 and the Second Division Title in 1997/98. Campbell then moved to Ayr United where he was first team manager and set up an excellent youth system. A spell out of football management took Campbell to work with the SFA before joining Stenhousemuir FC as the Head of Youth Development. During his time at Stenhousemuir, Campbell took over the reins at Cumnock Juniors where he took them to joint top of their division before resigning to take up his role as First Team Manager with the Warriors.
